Matthew was a tax collector who was called by Jesus Christ and accepted as he did the work according to the responsibility entrusted to him. Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh and the flesh made bread; he is the seed sown, the seed received in the Eucharist. The baptised Christian is the place where this Eucharist is sown, where faith and hope live on. We can say that the faithful are fertile ground, especially if they actively receive communion and the sacrament of confession. Piety, charity and friendship are the reservoirs of water used to irrigate the faith so that it can grow.
