World Bees Day is celebrated every 20 May. We produce 3,000 to 4,000 tonnes of honey a year, according to figures published by the EDBM in 2023. Vermicompost has been used in Madagascar for many years. It is used as a fertiliser for organic agricultural production. Among those using this fertiliser is the ‘Lanja Miakatra’ association. The association's founder Ranaivoarison Basile, Papa Bio, shared his knowledge and experience on the subject.
The National Chamber of Agriculture is helping farmers and beekeepers to master beekeeping techniques. Farmers from three organisations in the Analamanga region benefited from training organised by themselves. The training is part of the FFF FAO project to combat climate change. The Chamber of Agriculture believes that bees contribute a great deal to this work. It has been found that 90% of Malagasy households still use charcoal and firewood for cooking. This practice leads to accelerated deforestation in the areas concerned.
