First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians (1 Cor 2: 1-5)

I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

When I came to you, brothers and sisters,
proclaiming the mystery of God,
I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom.
For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you
except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling,
and my message and my proclamation
were not with persuasive words of wisdom,
but with a demonstration of spirit and power,
so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom
but on the power of God.

— The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 119: 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102

Lord, I love your commands.

How I love your law, O LORD!
It is my meditation all the day.

Your command has made me wiser than my enemies,
for it is ever with me.

I have more understanding than all my teachers
when your decrees are my meditation.

I have more discernment than the elders,
because I observe your precepts.

From every evil way I withhold my feet,
that I may keep your words.

From your ordinances I turn not away,
for you have instructed me.

Gospel

Alleluia, alleluia.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor.

Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke (Lk 4: 16-30)

He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor. No prophet is accepted in his own native place.

Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up,
and went according to his custom
into the synagogue on the sabbath day.
He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:
‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.’
Rolling up the scroll,
he handed it back to the attendant and sat down,
and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
He said to them,

“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

And all spoke highly of him
and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.
They also asked,

“Is this not the son of Joseph?”

He said to them,

“Surely you will quote me this proverb,
‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here in your native place
the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’

And he said,

“Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place.
Indeed, I tell you,
there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah
when the sky was closed for three and a half years
and a severe famine spread over the entire land.
It was to none of these that Elijah was sent,
but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
Again, there were many lepers in Israel
during the time of Elisha the prophet;
yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

When the people in the synagogue heard this,
they were all filled with fury.
They rose up, drove him out of the town,
and led him to the brow of the hill
on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.
But he passed through the midst of them and went away.

The Book of Deuteronomy (Dt 4: 1-2, 6-8)

You shall not add to what I command... Observe them carefully.

Moses said to the people:

“Now, Israel, hear the statutes and decrees
which I am teaching you to observe,
that you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land
which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
In your observance of the commandments of the LORD, your God,
which I enjoin upon you,
you shall not add to what I command you nor subtract from it.
Observe them carefully,
for thus will you give evidence
of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations,
who will hear of all these statutes and say,
‘This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people.’
For what great nation is there
that has gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us
whenever we call upon him?
Or what great nation has statutes and decrees
that are as just as this whole law
which I am setting before you today?”

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 15: 2-3, 3-4, 4-5

The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.

Whoever walks blamelessly and does justice;
who thinks the truth in his heart
and slanders not with his tongue.

Who harms not his fellow man,
nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor;
by whom the reprobate is despised,
while he honors those who fear the LORD.

Who lends not his money at usury
and accepts no bribe against the innocent.
Whoever does these things
shall never be disturbed.

The Letter of Saint James (Jas 1: 17-18, 21b-22, 27)

Be doers of the word.

Dearest brothers and sisters:
All good giving and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change.
He willed to give us birth by the word of truth
that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you
and is able to save your souls.

Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this:
to care for orphans and widows in their affliction
and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

— The word of the Lord.

Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark (Mk 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23)

You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem
gathered around Jesus,
they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals
with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands.
— For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews,
do not eat without carefully washing their hands,
keeping the tradition of the elders.
And on coming from the marketplace
they do not eat without purifying themselves.
And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed,
the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. —
So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him,

“Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders
but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?”

He responded,

“Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines human precepts.’
You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.”

He summoned the crowd again and said to them,

“Hear me, all of you, and understand.
Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person;
but the things that come out from within are what defile.

From within people, from their hearts,
come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder,
adultery, greed, malice, deceit,
licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.
All these evils come from within and they defile.”

— The Gospel of the Lord.

When Jesus came to John the Baptist to be baptised in order to share his life with his fellow Jews, did Jesus want to teach us that he is God who comes to repent, especially as we who are children of sin and have inherited sin, will not be baptised? Jesus was not baptised in water to sanctify himself, but he sanctified the water of the Jordan... Catechesis on Jesus, a man of prayer, in collaboration with Fr Justolat Rafaralahimboa.

21st Sunday of the Year - B : Choose Christ, serve Christ; Spirit and life, Lord, the words you have spoken. You have the words of eternal life. The book of Joshua recounts the events that marked the entry of the people of Israel into the promised land. Joshua was a judge who gathered the people together in a place called Shechem; Joshua forced the Israelites to choose which god they wanted to worship. Joshua did not force the people, but he set an example and said: But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord. It is a temptation for us to see many abandon their responsibilities, so don't be afraid to walk alone and stand by faith...
