Bilharzia is a parasitic disease caused by a flatworm called Schistosoma. In Madagascar we find three species of Schistosoma, namely Schistosoma mansoni, responsible for intestinal Bilharzia; Schistosoma haematobium, responsible for Bilharzia bladder and Schistosoma intercalatum, responsible for rectal Bilharzia. They are found in fresh standing water or in streams with little flow. They first pass through intermediate hosts, which are snails, before being transmitted to humans.
The immune system is a collection of elements and functions that work together and coordinate to monitor and contain any form of aggression on the body. This immune system needs to be maintained to best perform its defense function.
Rift Valley Fever is a disease that affects ruminant mammals. Transmission between animals occurs through the bite of a mosquito which is both the reservoir and the vector of the virus responsible for the disease. This disease has been known since 1880, and the first case of contamination in humans dates from 1951, in South Africa. Fever is spread in humans by handling the blood and eating the meat and milk of sick animals.
