22 July - Originally from the city of Magdala, on the western shore of Lake Tiberias, Mary Magdalene or Mary of Magdala, sister of Martha and Lazarus, is the most present woman in the New Testament.
Luke's Gospel presents her as the woman whom Jesus delivered from seven demons; she became one of his disciples - perhaps the most important female disciple of Christ after his own mother - and followed him until his death.
For all four Gospels she was the first witness to the Passion of Christ and the Resurrection of Jesus. They mention her attending the crucifixion with the other women; in the three synoptic Gospels she also attends the burial. She was the first witness of the Resurrection of Jesus (Gospel of Mark, 16, 1f; Gospel of Matthew, 28, 9), but she does not recognize him immediately, and tries to touch him, which will earn her the phrase "Do not touch me" or "Do not hold me back", in the Gospel of John, 20, 17.
