04 May - Sylvain, revered as bishop of Gaza in the fourth century, was probably a Roman soldier converted to Christianity. After serving in the army, he became a priest and then was elected bishop of Gaza where he converted many polytheists.
IHe was arrested at the time of the persecution of Christians under Diocletian. He was sent with forty other Christians to work in a mine. He and his companions judged useless, they are tortured (with their eyes removed and their feet burned) before being beheaded in 311.
