20 April - Odette is a nun who died in 1158. Born into an illustrious family from Brabant, Belgium, her parents wanted to marry her to the knight Simon. Dragged to the altar, she refused before the congregation when she declared whether she would take her suitor as her husband.
To the usual question, "Do you take as your husband..." She was not content to say only: "No, not at all", but this: "Since you are so anxious to know if I am willing to accept this young lord as your spouse, learn that I will accept neither him nor any other; my love and faith are pledged to Jesus Christ".
To discourage all the other suitors coveting her beauty, she cut off her nose, entered the nuns of Prémontré, at the Convent of Good Hope, of which she became prioress. It was there that she died, at less than twenty-five years of age.
