18 April - Parfait of Cordoba was a Christian priest from Cordoba, Spain. A monk ordained priest, he sat in the Basilica of Saint-Aciscle in Córdoba. Since Andalusia was under Muslim political authority, Christians were tolerated under certain conditions of discretion.
In 850, Parfait was challenged by two Muslims to say who was the greatest prophet, Jesus or Mohammed.
At first he preferred not to answer, so as not to provoke them, but they insisted that he give them an answer, promising to protect him from reprisals. He then told them in Arabic that Muhammad was a false prophet and an immoral man for allegedly seducing the wife of his adopted son. The Muslims kept their promise and let him go, but a few days later, some of them changed their minds and had him arrested.
They asked friends to take him in themselves and had him put on trial. Parfait was convicted of blasphemy by the Islamic court and was executed. Legend has it that his last words were to bless Christ and condemn Mohammed and his Qur'an.
