Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - Second week of Ordinary Time - May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ open the eyes of our hearts to his light, so that we may perceive the hope that his call gives - Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 2, 23-28
The conflict between Christ and the Pharisees still continues. Saint Mark speaks of the observance of the Sabbath, a constant in the wake that Christ is more open-minded than the Pharisees who are obtuse. He values humanity more than the law, for He said: "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath". In other words, man is not supposed to be enslaved by the law, but it is up to him to interpret, think and evaluate the application of this law. He furthermore added: "The Son of Man is master, even of the Sabbath". The Sabbath is for Christ only a property, therefore it is not supposed to be restrictive but should bring freedom. Property has a time to use it, just as it has a time to set it aside and ignore it. It is therefore temperance in the exercise of the law, in the interest of humanity, which is the centre of Christ's message, in the face of the fundamentalism of the Pharisees. He took the example of David, when he and his retinue were forced to enter the house of God. Christ also teaches us here to practice the law and social principles, in the measure of reasonableness, to analyse and not to limit ourselves to the simple principle of the forbidden, but to consider humanity.
