Tuesday, September 1, 2020 - 22nd week of Ordinary Time - Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 4, 31-37 - A great prophet has risen among us, and God has visited his people.
We saw yesterday that the first mission entrusted by the Father to his Son Jesus is to preach the word of God, that is, the Gospel. And the Church continues to do so today. Thus, the healing and expulsion of unclean spirits was the enactment of the Gospel he preached. People are happy because they are free from the bondage of sickness and evil spirits. Jesus' words are powerful because they lead people to true freedom.
Here Jesus teaches in a synagogue on the Sabbath and meets a man possessed by an evil spirit. The man confessed that Jesus is the Holy One of God. Part of the fulfillment of the gospel that Jesus preaches is to cast out unclean spirits, so He commanded them to leave the man. This is also good news for us because it shows the defeat of evil and that Jesus is always victorious. So in our lives there are many temptations, and we must call upon the name of Jesus, the conqueror of evil, so that we too can be victorious.
Prayer is the most effective means by which we can overcome evil: a prayer of total trust in God and humility. It is the way of grace and the way of repentance. May the Lord's prayer be fulfilled in our lives: "Do not let us enter into temptation".
