The presence of the Centre de Développement de l'Aquaculture or CDA in Mahajanga has helped to promote fish farming in the Boeny Region and in many other regions of the island. The centre's mission is to promote agriculture and aquaculture: plants and animals...
It began operating in 1996, but the CDA Centre's area of activity at that time was shrimp farming, but since 2011 tilapia farming has been promoted. The Centre also produces and distributes tilapia fish to fish farmers in many regions. Only the CDA centre has tilapia Nilotica, which has not been mixed with other species,’ says Nivo Eulalie, a biologist at the Aquaculture Development Centre or CDA.
According to Ms Nivo Eulalie, there are already species of fish that we no longer see, and it is difficult to find them in Madagascar, so it is the responsibility of the Aquaculture Development Centre to protect and increase them.
It is possible to increase fish consumption in Madagascar. Those involved need to produce more fish. Fish produced by producers at the right time for fish farming does not meet the demand from farmers. The Mahajanga Aquaculture Development Centre produces more than 2 million fry every year. The products will not only be sent to fish farmers in the Boeny region, but producers in the Analamanga region will also take the fry from them.
