25 August - Born on 25 April 1214 in the Château de Poissy, under the reign of his grandfather Philippe Auguste, Louis IX is the fifth child and second son of the future King Louis VIII, known as "the Lion", and Princess Blanche of Castile. He only became the heir at the age of four, after the early death of his elder brother Philip.
His mother, Blanca de Castilla, desperately wanted to breastfeed him and raise him herself. At that time, queens did not raise their children. People are well aware of the sweet words that this queen addressed to her son Louis, saying: "My son, I love you right after God and above all. But know this, that I would like to see you die rather than be damned for a single sin". As a child, Louis already had a good disposition for government, equality, justice and piety. In fact, he was reproached for spending too much time maintaining his spiritual life, to which he replied: "People are astonishing, I am reproached for my piety, whereas nothing would be said if I spent my time in worldliness and hunting".
When Louis became king, he first wanted to build the kingdom of God, he was convinced that this was the best way to establish his power. One of the best days of his life was when he broke down in tears as he walked before the eastern monks wearing the crown of thorns. After a serious illness, which was believed to have been miraculously cured, he went on a crusade to the Holy Land. Even the Saracen invaders appreciated his kindness, faith and courage. On his return to France, he did everything he could to ensure that his reign was Christian and strong. Louis is also a model of married life and the inscription on his ring reads as follows: "God, France and Marguerite". His wife's name was Marguerite. While on his way to the Crusade, he contracted the plague and died on 25 August 1270, the forty-fourth year of his reign. A monument has been erected here.
