April 17 - Anicet is the 11th pope, who sat from 155 to 166. He was born in Emesa in Syria and suffered martyrdom under Marcus Aurelius. Anicet is particularly venerated in Quebec (Canada).
Anicet is especially known for his struggle against the Gnostic heresy that was widespread in the Church during his pontificate. He is also famous for having solved the problems concerning episcopal ordination. Another important fact of Anicet's pontificate is his disagreement with Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, about the date of the celebration of Easter, which according to Polycarp should be the same as that of the churches of the East. In spite of this disagreement, Anicet was able to keep the peace and unity of the Church. This disagreement was ironed out by Anicet's successor, Pope Victor. According to tradition, Anicet's remains are laid to rest in St. Calixtus Cemetery on the Appian Way.
