15 April - Born in Armorica at the beginning of the fifth century, Paterne went to England to live a monastic life, where he took an active part in the foundation of churches and monasteries. He was the first bishop of Vannes and died between 490 and 511.
As for the little known part of his life, Paterne is considered one of the seven founders of Brittany. In 465, during the Council of Vannes led by the six bishops of the Ecclesiastical Province of Tours, he was ordained bishop. According to tradition, Paterne is the founder of many monasteries in Wales, he is also the one who converted many Irish kings.
During the Middle Ages, Paterne was venerated mainly in Vannes where a pilgrimage in honour of the seven saints of Brittany, called Tours de Bretagne, was held annually. Paterne is the patron saint of Vannes and other places such as Brittany, Tourraine and Maine.
