13 April - Martin I was Pope in July 649. Originally from Todi (Umbria), he was also legate to Constantinople. In the first year of his pontificate he convened a Lateran Council, which condemned monotheism and the Byzantine doctrine spread in 638 by the Emperor Heraclius.
In June 653, Emperor Constant II had him arrested. Imprisoned first in Constantinople, he was then deported to Crimea where he died in 655. He was placed among the martyrs and his fame was equal to that of the Fathers of the Eastern Church, such as Maximus the Confessor.
