Ranavalona I had persecuted Christians, so it was difficult for missionaries to found the Church in Antananarivo. In 1861, Prince Rakoto (Radama II) had proclaimed religious freedom after the queen's death. Fr. Cazet, Apostolic Vicar of Antananarivo, had faced many challenges.
