In the 19th century, the society of Jesus played an important role in the progress of evangelism in Madagascar. The most memorable names of the French Jesuit missionaries were Frs. Dalmond, Jouen, Cazet, Finaz. In spite of the difficulties encountered by the conflicts between the British and the French, the competition between Catholicism and Protestantism which was the religion of the State at the time, the number of Catholic Christians did not stop growing thanks to the efforts of Jesuit and Lasallian missionaries who were illuminated by the Holy Spirit.
