Friday, June 18, 2021 - Eleventh week of Ordinary Time - Blessed are the poor in heart, for the kingdom of Heaven is theirs - Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 6, 19-23
Could it be that we are offended by the words of Christ that we have just heard? And that we are tempted to reply: "It is your choice to be miserable, why forbid us to get rich?". In any case, Christ does not forbid us to take charge of our life, his teaching aims so that we are not obsessed with the ephemeral richness of this life, but to strive for eternal riches. Indeed, earthly wealth is subject to corruption and is the lust of others, yet we strive to amass more and more. Of course, it is our duty to make an effort to provide for our needs, but Christ does not want us to be so dazzled by it that we can no longer appreciate the light of salvation he offers us.
Temporal wealth is useful for supporting oneself, it is necessary for fulfilling duties towards oneself and towards others. But we must beware of falling into greed. We must not fall in the opposite direction and indulge in idleness and laziness. It is in our nature to have desires, but this does not allow us to covet the good of others.
