Wednesday May 12, 2021 - Sixth week of Paschal Time - I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Defender who will be with you forever - Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 16, 12-15

Today we will see three more functions of the Holy Spirit. First in our life as a disciple of Jesus Christ, he will guide us to understand the truth, even if at the moment we cannot stand it yet. This means that he will continue the mission of revelation of Jesus Christ by updating it so that we again understand the meaning of revelation in faith and in its light. One could say that he will assist the Church in the difficulty she will encounter in relating fidelity to Tradition and openness to the demands of the present time.

Then the Holy Spirit will lead us to Jesus, who is all Truth. In this way, we will be able to understand the person of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the meaning of the history he lived (his life, his death and his resurrection).

Finally, the Holy Spirit will "unveil future things" to us: that is to say, he will make us understand in each epoch every event in the light of revelation, of the Word of God which operates in the Community. To achieve this, the Holy Spirit will help us to make an "eschatological reading" of history, that is, we must read the present in the light of the story of Jesus Christ. For example, if we read history from the present, we conclude that evil (violence, corruption, pandemic…) triumphs over good (love, salvation, better life…). But if we read it in the light of Jesus Christ, we will find that it is love that has the last word even though it is seemingly defeated.

These three functions of the Holy Spirit will help us prepare for the celebration of the feast of Pentecost so that it will bear fruit in our life, especially at this critical time when hope and faith seem diminished because of this pandemic.

The Spirit of truth will guide you into all truth
