Thursday, September 03, 2020 - 22nd week of Ordinary Time - Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 5, 1-11 - Come after me, says the Lord, and I will make you fishers of men.
The teaching of Jesus Christ here was in Peter's boat. The latter is as the soothsayer is a fisherman. At that time Jesus told him to cast out his nets. It was a job that Peter had mastered and he knew he would not get anything out of it, but because of Jesus' words, he did it.
However, he and his friends caught many fish. Obedience to Jesus' words is the key to Peter's success. We must also follow the words of Jesus if we are to succeed in life, for the very power of God is already manifest. Here we see that Peter and his companions had worked in vain before Jesus commanded them, relying only on their own strengths and abilities. Peter confessed his insignificance before Jesus, and it changed his whole life. Obedience to Jesus made them fishers of men instead of fish. It is a work that Jesus entrusted to them so that the kingdom of God might spread on earth. However, they realized that catching men was much more difficult, so they had to make many sacrifices.
The Church also celebrates St. Gregory the Great today. He is the 64th successor of St. Peter. One of the words he always passed on to Christians at that time was: "The word of God must nourish us spiritually and not remain mere knowledge". As the successor of St. Peter, he also worked to make England Christian. Saint Gregory the Great: pray for us!
