Sunday, May 17, 2020 - Sixth Easter Sunday - Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 14, 15-21 - If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, says the Lord; my Father will love him, and we will come to him.
In a short time we will celebrate the Ascension of the Lord and Pentecost. Today's Gospel already puts us in a situation: on the one hand Jesus promises a Defender to his disciples and on the other He does not leave them orphans and even promises to return.
To love Jesus is to keep his commandment: "I give you a new commandment: that you love one another". He who truly loves must be attentive to the words of the one he loves. Jesus does not leave his disciples orphans, but promises to send them the Spirit of truth that will always accompany them to face difficulties.
The Spirit is a gift from God which is accessible only to those who are ready to receive it by opening themselves to God. He who is still hindered by the troubles of this world cannot receive it. We Christians have received this Spirit at our baptism which makes us heirs to eternal life and in communion of life with Jesus. Already on earth we can feel his presence: it is this Spirit that keeps us in communion in the Church, it is the Spirit that makes us light of the world.
