Our dairy products are still unable to meet the demand of the domestic market. Reasons to import dairy cows to supplement what is already here ...
The 165 cows imported from France are now in Antsirabe. Thousands of cows will still be imported to fill the milk shortage in Madagascar.
We import around 3,500 tonnes of powdered milk per year to supplement production. Therefore, milk in Madagascar is always less than 26,000,000 litres. Therefore, Malagasy entrepreneurs must add 8,000 dairy cows, in order to achieve the same production, or the equivalent of 3,500 tonnes of powdered milk, said Deputy Minister of Livestock, Dr Raymond.
In addition, cattle breed improvement in Madagascar is a challenge to get good quality cattle weighing up to 500 kilograms, if that is half the weight of the current local breed. Not only will it be a healthy meat extract to meet consumer demands, but it can be used for agriculture because of its strength to improve the economy of producers.
The artificial insemination technique was initiated, in the fokontany of Zatobe, commune of Marotampona, district of Tsiroanomandidy, to improve cattle breeding in the region of Bongolava, using a good "limousine" breed. It's a start in Bongolava, but the technique will be shared with 22 other regions.
The Mada-Omby cooperative was the first to benefit from the technique in Madagascar. Funding from the FDA, under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, through the Development Project, supported by the European Union.
