The exploration of the forest floor is important for the protection of the forest and its fauna. Ong Durrell is responsible for inspecting the forest, according to Mandimbihasina Angelo Ramy. Ong Durrell is a non-governmental endangered species organization headquartered in Jersey.

Durrell arrived in Madagascar in 1986, first raising the "angonoka tortoise" in Ankarafantsika, then expanding it to protect the forest. Durrell works with grassroots communities in many areas.
