Today's reading tells us about the selection of the twelve apostles. They are chosen intentionally by Jesus, but before making his choice, He spent a whole night in prayer on the mountain. He prayed to know who to choose. The evangelist Luke considers this method of sorting as a model in the choice of each one who is to be assigned to a service or mission within the Church. They are called apostles, in other words, envoys, missionaries. Jude is none other than Thaddaeus; and Simon is the Zealot.

Simon Peter is the first of the list and Judas Iscariot completes it. The latter is infamous for betraying the one who chose him. It is to tell us that he was close to Jesus Christ, one of those he had chosen, was responsible for his violent death. Therefore, let us not rest on our laurels, on our title of Christian, for this does not immunise us from the temptations that could turn us away from the project of Jesus.
