Papriz rice cultivation technique is a way to increase rice production in Madagascar. The project covers 22 regions which started their operations in 2008 in 05 highland regions.

For Madagascar, the challenge defined by the Government is to achieve food independence by 2023 and to be able to export rice in 2025. One way to achieve this is to use the papriz rice cultivation technique.

The project is now in its third phase and will work with the Japanese government. The first meeting of all stakeholders involved was held on July 6, 2021. The goal for the completion of the third phase of the Papriz project by 2025 is to focus on the production side to ensure food independence and exporting the rest of the product.

In order to achieve these objectives, the “model site” for rice production will be set up in an area with a large surface area and sufficient water, such as Alaotra in the Alaotra-Mangoro region, Ambohibary-Sambaina in the Vakinankaratra region.

Ms. Harivony Ramananjanahary, Director of Production Support at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, said the papriz technique can be well combined with hybrid rice seeds.
