Christian brothers and sisters! Jesus continues to teach us how to become Christians and how to behave as Christians. By observing these teachings, we are no longer of the world even though we live in this world but are called and sent into the world to change it. Last Sunday, his teaching said, "He who does not take up his cross is not worthy of me". He makes many demands on us to have this dignity. This teaching continues for this 14th week of Ordinary Time in year "A".

Jesus insists that it is by taking the cross that we are made worthy. He asks us to share His suffering by taking His yoke and observing His teachings. My yoke is light, He says, because He helps us to bear it, and my commandment is easy," He says again, "because His commandment is none other than the love that we must put into practice. The reason is that we may find peace in His goodness. It is a proof of his love for us and also an expression of God's love. He who truly loves possesses this virtue and goodness of soul in his relationships with others. Jesus teaches us this so that we can learn from Him.

But before this call for us to take up His cross, which according to Him is light and assures us peace, Jesus first says a prayer. A sincere prayer of gratitude and humility. He Himself gave us the example. This does not mean that wise men are not necessary, but that wisdom in the eyes of men is not necessarily necessary in the eyes of God. What we need according to this prayer of Jesus is for us to be simple and humble before Him. This leads us to know Him better under His guidance.

So let us turn to God and ask Jesus' help in all the difficulties of life that may seem like a burden to us. It is a way for us to share his sufferings and his cross. He will relieve our pain and anguish, and assure us of salvation because there is no salvation without a cross. Amen!
